It is said that the interaction between neurons and the brain is the basis of thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

Brain waves are created due to electronic impulses between neurons. While there are different types of brain waves, alpha waves are associated with creativity and superior imagination. Therefore, the phrase “brain wave” refers to an intelligent or brilliant idea. Alpha waves are known to be produced when we become aware of various states such as mindfulness, meditation, or daydreaming, especially when the brain is at rest.

Meditation is also known to improve the cognitive capacity of the brain, and the effects remain with the practitioner throughout the day. A study by Harvard-affiliated researchers indicates a clear correlation between meditation and positive changes in the gray matter of the brain.

MRI imaging showed that after 8 weeks of regular meditation, the brain has a denser gray matter in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is responsible for controlling self-awareness, learning memory, compassion, reflection. Meditation helps reverse the effects of aging. Loss of gray matter is usually associated with aging. This is why mental faculties such as memory deteriorate with age.

In addition, regular meditation helps cell division, which seems to be effective in reversing the effects of aging due to the positive effect on the hippocampus. Studies in the field of psychosomatic medicine (mind-body medicine) show that people who regularly practice meditation experience lower levels of lipid peroxide – a hormone known to accelerate the effects of aging.

According to research studies conducted by Nobel Prize winner Elizabeth Blackburn, regular meditation is able to slow down telomere shortening, resulting in the following benefits:

– More optimistic thinking

– Improved mental clarity

– Longevity

– Increased awareness

– Better cognitive ability.

In addition, it is scientifically proven that meditation stimulates creativity and reduces depression.
