The cold season brings a lot of joy for those who love the snow and the winter holidays, but at the same time, it brings a series of inconveniences. And maintaining an active lifestyle with the arrival of the cold season can be increasingly difficult as the weather becomes darker and the days shorter. With less sunlight and time available to spend outdoors, our energy and motivation are becoming less and less active.

Generally during the winter months, many develop seasonal affective disorders that can cause several adverse symptoms, such as depression, loss of interest in various activities, low energy, lack of sleep, weight changes, poor concentration. A great way to combat these symptoms is through a balanced and active lifestyle!

However, there are many things we can do to make sure that the sudden change in temperature does not take us out of rhythm.
1. Dress well and get out to move
Movement becomes more and more important for our well-being as we age. Even if it’s not as pleasant to go outside when the temperature starts to drop, maintaining an active lifestyle is much easier to maintain when you continue to practice your favorite outdoor activities. The best time to practice outdoor activities in the cold season is usually in the middle of the day when the sun is much stronger. Whether you go for a run or go for a walk, a bike ride, or a jog, the sun and fresh air will help you recharge and reduce stress. So let’s do a little exercise every day.

2. Eat healthy foods that keep you fit
In general, in the cold season, it is recommended to consume a few more calories to help the body maintain a constant temperature. Be careful, however, this does not mean permission to gain weight. You can eat foods high in healthy fats such as salmon, avocado, red meat. A varied diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, probiotics, and prebiotics, will be able to support our long-term health. In this sense, it also helps to avoid alcohol and smoking.
3. Try to get quality sleep and avoid stress
Rest and relaxation are essential aspects that we need to take care of in order to have a healthy immune system.
Studies show a low response of leukocytes to the attack of pathogens in people who sleep less than 6 hours a night, so it would be good to get enough rest and add relaxing and enjoyable activities to our daily routine.
4. Keep training from home
In case the weather does not allow us to stay too much outdoors, we have the option to continue our training at home. There are so many sites and classes online that we definitely have a choice.
A quick, daily workout is an amazing way to keep fit, stay active, and boost your mood in the cold season. To be even more interactive, you can invite other family members and do a group movement session.
5. Learn to practice a winter sport
There are so many great winter sports to choose from, and they set your blood and adrenaline in motion.
Challenge yourself to try something new and even take a snowboarding or skiing lesson, or maybe even a skating course. Winter sports are fun and you even have the chance to burn a few extra calories.
6. Sun and Vitamin C
In addition to making us feel good, the sun’s rays also trigger the production of Vitamin D in the body, which we especially need in the cold season. Also, Vitamin C should not be missing from the daily routine of any person who practices a healthy lifestyle. Natural citrus juices are easy to prepare and are a rich source of vitamin C. Especially since it also contributes a lot to strengthening the immune system.
