For many of us, a glass of wine is perhaps one of the simplest pleasures of life. There should be no particular reason to indulge, but nothing is more relaxing and enjoyable than enjoying a cold glass of wine, be it white, pink, or black, on a hot summer day, that you enjoy alone or with friends.

While most of us consume wine assuming that their favorite glass of Cabernet involves nothing but the fruit it is not. In reality, there are some hidden components in your wine in the winemaking process that involve products of animal origin.

Among the most common products of animal origin used in winemaking are:

  1. Egg white – is used to remove harsh tannins
  2. Milk – is used to remove phenolics from red or white wine.
  3. Gelatin derived from the fish – is used for the clarity of white wines

Therefore, the use of any of these products prevents a glass of wine from being called vegan.

Although it may seem easy for herbal products to be used instead of those of animal origin, the products that winemakers can use in winemaking are limited to a list of approved products, which makes the whole process easier said than done.

The good news is that recently, several products have appeared on the market that is derived from plants and can be used in ways similar to those of animal origin. The use of these herbal products makes the wines vegan, thus coming to the aid of vegans consuming wine everywhere.

More recently, new herbal products are appearing, giving winemakers more tools to replace wine products of animal origin with plant-derived products.

For consumers, it is difficult to know what products have been used to make good wine, as the ingredients used on the wine label rarely appear. Usually, the best way to find out if a wine is vegan is to consult the website or fact sheet of that winery.

However, it is important to note that these “finishing” agents, whether from animals or plants, do not become part of the composition of wine. Once added, these products are filtered from the wine so that until the wine is bottled, there will be only very small traces of these products.
